Record Store Day Schedule of Events

Vinyl Revival is proud to be participating in Record Store Day, an international day to celebrate the culture of the independently owned record store, on April 19, 2014.  Vinyl Revival will stock a selection of titles that are Record Store Day exclusive, limited edition and first releases.  As part of the Record Store Day celebration, there will be free entertainment by indie/alternative musicians, a book signing, light refreshments and drinks during store hours from 10 a.m. – 9:30 p.m.

March’s First Friday Flicks indie film screening series kicks off on Friday, March 7th at 7 p.m. with a musical double feature.  “Meet Me on South Street:  The Story of JC Dobbs” and Rufus Harley – Pipes of Peace, an intimate profile of the world’s first jazz bagpipe player, Philadelphia musician, Rufus Harley,  both by George Manney, will screen.

Special guests at the March 7th screening include Stephen Caldwell from The Orlons and DJ Steve Kurtz! Director George Manney is also scheduled to appear.

First Friday Flicks will also screen on Saturdays each month at 2 p.m.  Tickets are $8, $5 for students and seniors. Screening events are BYOB and snacks.

Rock & Roll: Alive and Well

I am very optimistic about the future of rock and roll! For a while, there was a lot of dance/pop music dominating the airways, but there currently seems to be a really strong crop of rock and roll bands out there to that I am really excited about.

Attending the Made in America concert the past two years has introduced me to a number of bands that I am listening to and going to see in concert.  I saw Gary Clark Jr. there for the fist time and just caught him opening for Kings of Leon the other night.  Love him and them!  This year at Made in America, I saw Imagine Dragons and The Gaslight Anthem, two more bands I look forward to seeing in concert again.  Dr. Dog is another favorite of mine and I finally got to see them live again after missing every one of their local shows the past two years.  A couple of bands that I haven’t seen yet but hope to see soon are Arcade Fire and Arctic Monkeys. There’s so much good stuff out there, it’s hard to name just a few of my faves.

“Meet Me on South Street: The Story of JC Dobbs” Kicks Off Spring First Friday Flicks Series

Vinyl Revival continues its indie film screening series, First Friday Flicks in association with FirstGlance Film Festival, in its Vault theater with “Meet Me on South Street:  The Story of JC Dobbs” by George Manney on Friday, March 7th at 7:00 p.m.  First Friday Flicks will also screen on Saturdays each month at 2 p.m.  Tickets are $8, $5 for students and seniors. Screening events are BYOB and snacks.

“Meet Me On South Street: The Story of JC Dobbs” documents the evolution of Philly’s fertile music and arts subculture in the 1970’s until the sad closing of JC Dobbs in 1996.  With archival photographs, videos and contemporary interviews, George Manney recreates the rich history of Philadelphia’s premiere rock and roll bar.  “Meet Me On South Street: The JC Dobbs Story” stars Stephen Caldwell from The Orlons, Tommy Conwell, Greg Davis from Beru Revue, Cyndy Drue, Andre Gardner, George Thorogood & The Destroyers, Charlie Gracie, Robert Hazard & many more!

The spring First Friday Flicks, Indie Film Screening Series, will also include:

“Sadie,” – a web series, by Nicole Agostino, on April 4th at 7 p.m. and Saturdays in April at 2 p.m. – Sadie’s dad is a rock and roll legend, and her mom a deceased rock photographer. Sadie longs to be a part of the rock and roll circus, so while her dad is on tour, she sneaks into bars to photograph bands. Sadie spotlights the best local Philly area rock bands, and weaves a narrative of a young music  photographer and her journey to the big time!  “Sadie” stars Alyssa Kempinski, Joe Reno, Nikki Bell, Falon Joslyn, Zaire Harris, Nicole Cinaglia, Beverly Rivera and Patrick Raquet (P Diesel) and features the music of En Fuego, Shorty Boy Boy, John & Brittany, Dagny, Cait Black, Ginger Coyle, Collisions, Matthew Caringi, The Colorfield Theory, Gang, Ruby the Hatchet, Sinai, Walt Lafty of Silvertide, Darby Trials, and Mean Street.

Show Us Ur Shorts – Open mic style film screening on May 2nd at 7:00 p.m. – Bring your short film up to 20 minutes in length and Vinyl Revival will show it. Afterwards, filmmakers and attendees can mix, mingle and network while enjoying drinks and light refreshments. Films will be screened on a first come, first serve basis.  The best short, as selected by the audience, will win a pair of ALL ACCESS PASSES to FirstGlance Film Fest 17 Philadelphia (valued at $180.)

Whether the lyrics are happy or sad, there’s no denying that Christmas music can touch your heart. You can put a Christmas tune on and cry your eyes out or merrily decorate your home to the sounds of the season.  From classical standards by gospel choirs to novelty tunes by popular artists, there are Christmas tunes for every musical taste. There are many, many Christmas songs that I enjoy hearing every year, but here is a list of what I’d consider to be my favorite 10 Christmas songs.

It’s My Birthday Two

Today we remember the life and music of two of rock & roll’s greatest, John Lennon and John Entwistle, both born on October 9th.
John Lennon, founding member of The Beatles, would have been 73 years old.  Although his voice was silenced at the young age of 40, he’s left a legacy of music and peace that still resonates today. His musical career began in the 1950’s in Liverpool England where he formed a skiffle band called The Quarreymen.  This band would later evolve into The Beatles.   The Beatles, as you might already know, took the world by storm in the 1960’s.  Lennon and McCartney became one of the most influential and innovative songwriting teams of all time, Lennon’s solo work raised our social consciousness and the rest is history.
I had the most amazing trip to Liverpool this past summer.  While there, I went to the house where Lennon lived with his Aunt Mimi, went to Strawberry Fields and saw the open space where John used to run and play, visited the Casbah Coffee Club where John’s name is still inscribed on the wall, and hung out at the Cavern Club where The Beatles played to a packed house.  It was such a moving experience to see the places John wrote and sang about in his songs and I highly recommend a trip to Liverpool for every Beatles’ fan.
Although I never had the honor of seeing Lennon live, I did have the  pleasure of seeing Entwistle perform live on several occasions with his band, The Who.  It was something I never thought would happen especially after the band announced their farewell tour in 1982.  I was a young teenager and I begged my parents to let me go to JFK Stadium to see the band who I thought I’d never ever get to see again.  They said I couldn’t go and I was crushed!  Luckily for me, there were more gigs after the ’82 farewell tour and I was fortunate to see Entwistle play.  His bass playing really added an extra umph to the band which contributed to their heavy sound. It was a sad day when I heard the news that John passed.  I actually had tickets to see The Who when he died.  I’m glad for the shows where I did get to see him play.
Today, I celebrate their musical legacies and hope to turn a new generation of music lovers onto them by continuing to sell their music…on vinyl.

We’re Now A Record Store Day Record Store

We are super excited to announce that Vinyl Revival is now a participating Record Store Day record store!  This designation means that we will sell the special  Record Store Day releases in our store on Record Store Day and on Black Friday.

Record Store Day is a celebration of music by independent record stores held on the third Saturday of April that  features special releases, live performances, etc.  We are so happy to be included in this group of indie retailers who truly care about keeping the spirit of the record store alive in the digital age.  We plan on making our first Record Store Day a huge celebration for all of our customers and our community!
