Monkees' albums are available at Vinyl Revival.

There Was Lots of Monkee-ing Around in 1966

The TV show, The Monkees, premiered on September 12th, 1966.  With comedy that was a little off-the-wall and fun music, it’s no surprise that the series still lives on in re-runs and the music continues through the touring of the remaining members.

The Monkees were, and still are, one of my favorite groups.  I used to watch their show every day growing up and got to see them for the first time in the mid-eighties in Atlantic City.  I saw them pretty much every time they played Philly after that.  I even had the pleasure of meeting Davy Jones after a performance at the Woodbine Inn in NJ in the late eighties/early nineties.  He was so nice to talk to and autographed my Monkees’ picture disk.

If you’re a Monkees fan like me, then you may want to stop by and pick up The Monkees Greatest Hits, More of the Monkees or my favorite, Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd.

What’s your favorite Monkees’ episode or album?

Justin & JAY Z – Perfect Together

Last night, I finally saw the concert I’ve been looking forward to all summer, Justin Timberlake and JAY Z at Citizens Bank Park.  I saw Justin back in 2007 and JAY Z for the first time at Made in America last year and really enjoyed both of their shows but seeing them perform TOGETHER just took the concert to a new level.  They were both amazing!

I thought they’d each do their own set, kind of like the way Elton John and Billy Joel do their Piano Man tours, but I was pleasantly surprised when they began alternating performances before heading into their own individual sets.  I have to admit that I prefer my rap in small doses, so I think I enjoyed JAY Z even more because the songs went back and forth from rap to more R & B for a little bit.

Both performers put on a such high energy show, it was difficult to sit down.  You just couldn’t help but dance all night.   I will definitely go see both of them again.  It was a show well worth the ticket price.

Did you go to the show?  How’d you like it?

What’s better than a music festival?  A tie-dye music festival!

If you’re looking for some family fun this Saturday, look no further than the Tie-Dye Music Festival at Community Arts Center, 414 Plush Mill Road, Wallingford, PA. The Tie-Dye Music Festival is an all ages, free admission, family event sponsored by Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union.

The 50 & Counting Tour Stops in Philly

Stage and tongue pit from The Rolling Stones concert June 21st at the Wells Fargo Center in Philly.

Stage and tongue pit from The Rolling Stones concert June 21st at the Wells Fargo Center in Philly.

There was so much music going on yesterday with the Make Music Philly Day, the Firefly Festival in Dover, DE (tickets are still available – Tom Petty is playing tonight), Southside Johnny and the Poor Fools at XPN’s Free at Noon Concert, and of course, The Rolling Stones.

I have been a Stones fan for over 30 years and have seen them every time they’ve been in town and last night was no exception.  A Stones concert is always a great night out and I had a blast.  From the opening of “Get Off of My Cloud” to the closing with “Satisfaction,” they put on one hell of a show.  One of my favorite songs of the night had to be “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking” with its kick ass jam at the end.  I’ve never seen Mick Taylor before and thought he was amazing on this number. What a treat!

What was your favorite song of the night?

Frank-ly Lovin’ Folk/Punk

I love discovering new music and WXPN is a great place to do that.  As a member, I try to get to a Free at Noon concert at the World Café Live at least once a month.  Last Friday I checked out a great act, Frank Turner and his band The Sleeping Souls.  Turner’s described by Wikipedia as an English folk/punk singer-songwriter, and as strange as that may sound, his sound is strangely fantastic.

I love any kind of music with an edge and Tuner and his band definitely delivered with some hard rock riffs that you just had to move to but he also had a couple softer, more folky songs with lyrics that evoked feelings and that listeners could relate. I especially liked his songs “Losing Days” and “The Way I Tend to Be.” I’m including a link to a live performance of “Losing Days” here so you can check him out too.

Despite having just released his fifth studio album, Tape Deck Heart in April,  I shamefully had never heard of Frank Turner until last week. He is now an artist I will keep on my radar.
